IBCLCs: Shaping the Future

March 2, 2011 is the 10th annual IBCLC Day, a global celebration of the important role of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants as part of the healthcare team. IBCLCs support breastfeeding families and serve as expert resources for other health care providers.

This year’s theme, “IBCLCs: Shaping the Future” highlights the importance of breastfeeding to a child’s future and the future of a community, and the many ways that an IBCLC can protect, support and inform.

What is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc. under the direction of the US National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLCs work in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice.
