Why Hand Expression?

  • Low milk supply in the first few days of breastfeeding is the leading cause of breastfeeding cessation.
  • Mothers who are unable to breastfeed (such as mothers of preterm babies) who combine hand expression with electric pumping have been proven to increase milk output significantly over moms who exclusively use an electric pump.
  • Mothers who combine “hands-on pumping” with electric pumping have also been shown to see consistent increases in supply.
  • Teaching hand expression has been shown to be more effective at removing colostrum from the breast while a mother and baby learn to successfully breastfeed, and hand expression is therefore one of the growing trends in lactation support.
  • Research shows that at two months, mothers who were hand expressing successfully were more likely to be breastfeeding than mothers who were only using a pump. Lactation experts also have shown that hand expression can be successful at removing more milk in the first few days of breastfeeding than an electric pump.

Educational Information on Hand Expression

Study Finds Hand Expression preferable in first 48 hours
In the early postpartum period, the best way to obtain colostrum is by gentle manual expression, this was found superior even to hospital grade breast pumps. Net milk yield per woman was 2 mL manually (median; range: 0–12.6 mL) and 0.6 mL (0–7.2 mL) by electric expression (P < 0.05).

Study Recommends Hands on Pumping – with video
Mothers of premature infants shouldn’t rely solely on breast pumps to establish and maintain their breast milk supply, researchers at Lucile Packard Children’s hospital and the Stanford University School of Medicine have found. Moms already have a simple, safe and free tool for assisting breast milk production: their own hands.
